Going Pro: Visiting Flis Performance with Mia LeRoux

We took a trip to visit Flis Performance in Daytona this month with our friend, Mia LeRoux, who you might recognize as our special guest from the Race Exhibition in February. Mia is a Semi-Pro, Spec Miata racecar driver with 2 wins and 7 podium finishes in 29 starts in her career.
Starting in Spec Miata racing, like Mia, can cost between $6K to $30K to build or buy an NA (1st Gen) or NB (2nd Gen) Miata. Racers like Mia typically start on simulators and go-karting, then hit the track and get a license from the SCCA.
But now she is ready to go to the next level. Which means going pro and competing in the MX-5 Cup next season. So we went to the home of the MX-5 Cup cars to check out some cars undergoing the transformation process.
Fun Fact: Flis Performance is the official manufacturer of all MX-5 Cup cars, and every stock ND MX-5 Miata is supplied to Flis Performance by your friends at Classic Mazda.
Owner, Todd Flis, let us know that a track-ready ND (4th Gen) Miata starts at about $100K. MX-5 Cup racers usually have sponsors and join a race team like our friends at Hixon Motorsports and BSI Racing.

Selin Captures First Win of the Season in New York

Selin Rollan, former Classic Mazda employee, brought home his first win of the 2023 MX-5 Cup season in Round 8 @ Watkins Glen, New York. This is his second podium finish of the season and puts our friends at Hixon Motorsports and @bsi_racing in 2nd place for the season standings. With 6 races to go, that puts the Selin in contention to win the overall championship for team HMS.

Hanna Zellers Taken Out By A Meteor Rock
Hanna Zellers, who won Fastest Female in rounds 5 & 6, was taken out by a rock in the first round of practice at Watkins Glen while she was bump-drafting former Indycar driver, James Hinchcliffe.
The meteor rock flew right into her radiator and the engine blew shortly after. HMS teammate, Thomas Annunziata, slid in the oil from Hanna’s blown engine and took a hit. Fortunately, both Thomas and Hanna were ok. Thomas even went on to a podium finish in Race 1.

Connor Zilisch Does Not Start
Connor Zilisch (Trevor Lee Media, HMS)
Fellow HMS teammate, Connor Zilisch, did not start at Watkins Glen. He will miss Road America as well as he is also racing Trans Am this season. Connor has an impressive record with 2 wins and 4 podium finishes in 6 races in the MX-5 Cup season. He will return in rounds 11 & 12 in August.

Rumors of the next-generation MX-5 Miata abound. While we know it is going to continue to offer a gasoline engine, there are whispers of a possible EV or Hybrid MX-5 in the future. Maybe an MX-5 with a Rotary powered PHEV?
