The BSI Racing Timeline to Success

For us at Classic Mazda, we are beyond thrilled and absolutely bursting with pride to celebrate our sponsorship partners over at BSI Racing finally winning the MX-5 Cup Championship with Bobby Gossett as the MX-5 Cup Driver’s Champion!
Folks, if you’ve been following our newsletter then you know the heartbreaks that owners Shea Holbrook and Nick Chorley of BSI Racing have experienced the last few years.
Back in 2024, BSI Racing arguably had the quickest cars on the grid with a great roster of racing drivers, including phenom #72 Connor Zilisch helming the red and white Classic Mazda Orlando livery MX-5 racecar.

Oh if you recognize that name, it’s probably because Connor drives in the NASCAR Cup series now. Yeah. NASCAR. Connor is a big deal. Also amongst that bunch? The 2024 MX-5 Cup Rookie of the Year Westin Workman driving the #13 car for BSI Racing.
And yet, the 2024 competition was fierce but the points weren’t there for BSI Racing.
Fast-forward to 2025 and we have one of the most heartbreaking near-misses. BSI Racing driver Tyler Gonzalez #57 drove a brilliant 2025 season.
Entering the finale weekend at Road Atlanta in contention to win the 2025 MX-5 Cup championship, Tyler had a brutal twist of fate and was caught in a massive three-car incident during Race 1. That DNF result instantly evaporated any hopes of securing the MX-5 Cup title.
And although BSI Racing would win the 2025 “Team Championship” that weekend, the ultimate trophy for the Top Driver agonizingly slipped through Tyler’s fingers.

But the hits don’t stop there. Early into the 2026 season en route to Texas for a weekend of races, disaster struck as BSI Racing’s primary trailer that hauls their race cars CAUGHT ON FIRE on the shoulder of I-95. You can’t make this stuff up.
The team had to make a split-second decision to quickly remove all three racecars and their racegear (which is A LOT OF STUFF) out of the burning trailer and to the side of the road.
Rather than packing it up and not racing that weekend, BSI Racing scrambled back to the shop, pulled 24 straight hours of wrenching and round-the-clock shifts to repair some of the fire-damaged race cars, prep a backup trailer, and make it to Austin, Texas just in time for opening practice.

The aftermath of the burning trailer
Then came a bit of retooling mid-season, when Tyler stepped away from the MX-5 program due to other racing obligations. This meant BSI Racing had to pivot on the fly and rally their race engineering efforts towards Bobby Gossett’s #44 racecar (alongside his twin sister Ellie Gossett #77).
What soon followed was something straight out of a movie. In one of the most unbelievable drives in MX-5 Cup history, Bobby started in 16th place at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway and somehow he fought all the way to the front where he actually won the dang race!!! I told you this was movie stuff.
The rest of the year had its usual ups and downs typical for a race series, but heading into the final race weekend, BSI Racing and Bobby were in prime position to secure the MX-5 Cup Driver’s Championship, and boy did he deliver!
The 1st race of the final weekend required 7 lead changes from Bobby, yo-yoing between his rivals until he brought it home for the win. Then in Race 2, he was a master tactician officially clinching the long-sought-after Mazda MX-5 Cup Driver’s Championship for a driver under the BSI Racing banner.

What else can we say except: congratulations once again to Shea, to Nick, to Bobby, to Ellie, and everyone involved behind the scenes. We are so, so happy to see you succeed! Here’s to next year!
